All right everyone, it’s nearly spring, which as you all of you know means MARCH MADNESS!!!!! In honor of this wonderful month, this month’s challenge is to create a mix with the following theme: Sports & Leisure. No minimum song requirement or anything, but HERE IS THE DEAL of course you don’t HAVE to make a mix with this theme, but by the end of this week I’ll have a mix blog up that we can all post to — by MARCH 31 post your mix, and I will choose a winner. The winner will then get to assign the theme/ challenge for April!!! Then that person will be able to judge the winner of that month’s contest, and so on and so forth. If you don’t finish your mix in time, guess what, you don’t get to pick a winner or compete! Also, if you win…you are entitle to one (1) free beer from me. That’s right, I’ll buy you one beer of your choice, even something slightly above the quality of Pabst. This setup is not by any means set in stone, but let’s see how it goes. Also, you can’t pick yourself as winner, that is outlawed, and you will be murdered by highly skilled pigeons if you do that. Also, If you don’t get your mix sent by the due date, you will be deemed a CUNT. That’s right, a CUNT.
So, with that all said, here’s the rotation for March, mixes due by MARCH 31!!!!!!

Alright, I took some liberty here with this month’s theme… I figure that while watching sports, we tend to do a lot of drinking. Drinking is a leisure activity. So is smoking grass. So is a number of other things we might imbibe from time to time. Anyhow, I think the track list says the rest:

34 – This one is a surprise….
Wow, looks like me and Trav are the only one’s who aren’t deemed a “cunt” (that’s right a cunt). He’s set quite a high bar but I think I can match it.
Tom Hedden – A New Game (Football. This is the theme to NFL Films.) http://www.tracksounds.com/reviews/power_glory_sam_spence_tom_hedden_david_robidoux.htm)
John Tesh – Roundball Rock (Basketball. This was the theme to the NBA on NBC. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the studio version. Luckily there are no major flubs in this version recorded live in Australia. Maybe Tesh was actually sober for once!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Gr5ccyg1ZM
Kleenex Girl Wonder – Prince of the Major Leagues (Baseball. From the bombastic synths of Tesh to the bombastic synths of Smith)
Ligh Blub Project – If I Liked Sports, I’d Be One (Sports! A charming little ditty with lines that could only have been written by a non-native English speaker)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVDICIfbnKc
Atom and His Package – If you Own the Washington, You’re a Cock (Football. Atom, from the liner notes to Attention! Blah Blah Blah: “This is a song about the fuckheadedness of sports teams that name themselves after Native Americans and think it’s somehow flattering to stereotype, since it’s in a “positive” way…that is, making charicatures of an entire group of people as brave warrior types is okay. Fuck them. Let’s not root for them.”)

The Mountain Goats – Cubs in Five (Baseball. I was always associate this song with the 2003 Mountain Goats show I saw. The Cubs were in the playoffs and had just gone up 1-0 and had a great shot at going to their first world series since 1945. This annoying guy in the crowd kept yelling for this song but they refused to play it saying – “I will not play that song because the cubs WILL win in five and I don’t want to jinx them” I think we all remember how that series turned out
)

The Zambonis – The Goalie is Drunk! (Hockey. This is the most annoying song on the album
http://www.thezambonis.com/
Mel and Tim – Backfield in Motion (Football)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX7jtHJqfn8
The Replacements – All He Wants to Do Is Fish (Fishing!) Written by drummer Chris Mars (my favorite Replacement)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Mars

http://ntl.matrix.com.br/pfilho/html/lyrics/l/last_game_of_the_season.txt
Luthor Vandross – One Shining Moment (Basketball) I wait all year for one shining moment.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpo55XmKXeI (this isn’t the vandross version but 1993 is my personal favorite tourny)
Vincent Price – Casey at the Bat (Baseball)
So there’s my humble contribution. Thanks for the great mix idea James!
Just to clarify. The lyrics to River Euphrates is “Ride the Tire down river Euphrates”, which is more of a tubing song than a wild animal riding song I thought it once was.
Good stuff so far, folks, very very nice work. Although Hotel California can drive a man to kill….it’s telling me to kill….AHHHHHHH!
Anywho, I probably should have won this month I tried mostly to group by sport:
1. Man or Astro Man? – Nitrous Burnout 2012 (Racing). This song is about the Indianapolis 500 in 2012.
2. Weird “Al” Yankovich – Rye or the Kaiser (Boxing. An interesting take a “Rocky” like champion who has grown a bit overweight. Legally exempt from lawsuits.
3. Ghostface Killah – The Champ (Boxing). Beginning with some old guy apparently trying to get Ghostface pumped up for a big fight, this song would also work for playing b-ball on the street, playa.
4. G- Love and Special Sauce – I-76 (Basketball). “Get alooooong, seventy-sixers: Dr. Jay, and Iverson!”
5. Curtis Blow – Basketball (Trapeze). An old school rap homage that not only describes how to play the game, but does it in a somehow sexual way.
6. Tai Mai Shu – Yao Ming Song (Basketball). Apocalypse Yao. Being Yao Mingavich.
7. Straight Playin’ – Shaq (Basketball). Shaq makes peace with his trade: “I love playing for da eastside (straight playin’), I miss playin’ fo’ the west side (straight playin’)”.
8. Erase Errata – Marathon (Running).
9. Je Suis France – Forklift Rodeos (Forklift Rodeos). As with Horse Swimming (see Trav’s mix) not many humans have been invited to these rodeos, but when they go they “meet people I don’t wanna know.”
10. Belle and Sebastian – Piazza, NY Catcher (Baseball). “Piazza New York catcher are you straight or are you gay?”
11. Black Flag – T.V. Party (Parties, Football). This one covers both sports AND leisure: “We’ve got, nuthin’ better to do / than sit around and have a couple of brews / We’re gonna watch all our favorite shows!….Monday Night Football!!!”
12. Ben Folds Five – Sports & Wine (you get the idea).
13. The Frogs – Lifeguard of Love (Swimming). “It’s wrong to love women you know.”
14. Imperial Teen – Waterboy (Various sports). The waterboy is an underrated member of any ball club. Little known fact: Greg Oden was once the waterboy for the 1907 Pittsburgh Pirates.
15. Guided By Voices – 14 Cheerleader Coldfront (Cheerleading). Ironically, this song comes in at number 15 while having 14 in its name.
16. Camper Van Beethoven – Take the Skinheads Bowling (Bowling). Yes, I too put this song on my mix. I was going to delete it, but then — OOPS, already hit burn.
17. Let’s Go Bowling – Let’s Go Bowling (Bowling). “Let’s go bowling!”
18. Nerf Herder – Golfshirt (Golf Apparel). An anthem for all those guys that wear golfshirts yet can’t get a girlfriend.
19. The 1985 Chicago Bears – Superbowl Shuffle (Football, shuffling). “I didn’t come here, lookin’ for trouble, I just came, to do the Superbowl Shuffle. We are the Bears, shufflin’ crew…/ We’re so bad, we knw we’ere good, blowin’ your mind like we know we should!”
20. Nada Surf – Popular (Football, being a Jock in high school). Fuck you jocks! I’m into fucking alternative!
21. Cornershop – Lessons Learned from Rocky I to Rocky III (Boxing). There’s more to to Rockies 1-3 than you think.
22. Paxcercise – Mr. Pacman (Aerobics).
23. Luther Vandross – One Shining Moment. I was hoping Brad would forget, but I think he’ll appreciate it none the less.
A sad farewell to March Madness. Rock Chalk Jayhawk go KU!
James have you ever made a mix without the Frogs on it? Not that I’m complaining…
James, dude, I got your CD and you put fucking Ricky Martin’s “Copa de La Vida” on it. You lose, dude. Automatically. You should be ashamed of yourself.
I don’t know what that song is, but it sounds great. Wasn’t me!
1. Byrd, Joe & The Field Hippies – Leisure World
“Leisure World – community for active young senior citizens in seal beach California”
2. Gary Glitter – Rock and Roll (Part 1)
How could I not put a convicted pedophile (currently jailed in Vietnam) on this mix? This is the ultimate sports & leisure song. It’s played throughout Happy Gilmore (a sports movie I watch in my leisure time!)….the “hey!” song
3. Fugazi – Ex-Spectator
start warming up to the idea of participating is sports…
4. At the Drive-In – Extracurricular

You DO like to kid about ricky martin, Nate. We will be getting wasted to your mix this summer many times!
Yes, Vic, sports do involve moving
I told you!
I see that no one used Chariots of Fire. I could have totally played the age card and used that, Flashdance and the music from American Flyers and Quicksilver. But I didn’t.

Well Shit! My Ultimate Mix didn’t post last night. I’ll have to get it tonight when I get home….effin internet…damn Al Gore. What a dick!
Sorry, Marcus, that was my fault. Sometimes it wants me to ‘moderate’ comments. And judging by your little Al Gore remark, I see why.

If this month taught me anything it’s that I’m a little thin on the jock rock. Some of the songs are less about sports than what it feels like to get your ass handed to you on a platter. But I’m pretty proud of what I could pull off. I think most of my songs were just making fun of GWU and Davidson.
