August/September Theme

Congratulations to those who managed to complete the Six Degrees of Separation Mix.  It was tough, it was brutal, it was in the middle of summer when people were getting married.   A time when people chose beer and illicit substances over mild mannered mix-making.  Times were simpler then, people laughed more.

Moving on, this month’s theme was decided by Travis S., not because Vic picked him to win last month, but because he hasn’t had a shot yet, and he’s made all of his mixes so far.   Congrats Trav.   Not to worry, Victor, you are still owed one (1) beer (beer) from me (you).  All mix club winners are entitled to one beer purchased from me.  This price is transferable and can be traded for the cash value of 12 (twelve) peanuts.

If you are actually reading this, and haven’t just skipped on to to see what the theme is, congratulations.  You have now wasted about 30-45 seconds.   I’d also like to extend a hearty welcome to the many new members this month.   Good luck, and I’ll have a rotation up in, oh, a couple days.

THIS MONTH’S THEME IS….Farrell’s Summer Vacation.

This one is pretty broad.   For those of you who don’t know, Farrell is spending time doing media analysis with the Lincoln Group in the Greenzone, or the IZ, in Iraq.   He’s been there since June and has about two more months to go (am I right Farrell?).   Take any angle you want on this.   You can pick songs about the topics and events in his posts –Cuban cigars, beards, body armor, palaces, Baghdad.   You can make a war themed mix, or a soundtrack for the events in his posts.   Whatever you want to do with this, go for it, as long as it relates to his blog in some way.

All right, let’s do this thang!

  4. Once upon a time, before Farrell even went on his summer vacay, the United States decided to liberate the Iraq. You could say, there was a LIBERATION FREQUENCY (Refused) in the air. As marines pulled down statues of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad, America cheered: “THE WORLD LOVES US AND IS OUR BITCH” (McLusky). At home, people were still skeptical, until Saddam was found hiding in a hole, and EXECUTION DAY (New Pornographers) was finally at hand.

Seeing all this bloodshed on TV and reading about it in the news wasn’t enough for Farrell, so he decided he should go for himself. Washington DC agreed, and the next thing Farrell knew, he was BANNED IN DC (Bad Brains). As he was coming into the airport, the plane did a quick FLYOVER (Asian Dub Foundation) so that Farrell could take in the beauty of his summer vacation home. As he arrived in the airport, he was met by some colleagues and some security. little did he know how intense the drive to the green zone would be. They quickly departed on their FREEDOM RIDE (Halo Benders) into the heart of Baghdad.

He was finally there. Not to his surprise, Farrrl found that Baghdad consisted of mainly two types of people: POLICE & THIEVES (The Clash). Despite this, a stable government was trying to be formed in Iraq, and Farrell saw that the outlines were far from a PERFECT GOVERNMENT (NOFX).

Despite any misgivings about the political climate, Farrell had a job to do. He was lucky enough to work in one of Saddam’s old palaces, and while at work he couldn’t help feeling like he was in a ZELDA FORTRESS (The Advantage). One fine day, a young man by the name of Barack Obama came to greet the workers, including Farrell. He had to bite his tongue, while secretly wanting to scream – YOU ARE THE GOVERNMENT (Bad Religion). He was happy to be on vacay, but it seemed he could still not escape BULLSHIT POLITICIANS (Propagandhi).

In his frustration and isolation, Farrell decided to write a blog, in which he attacked the APATHY (Subhumans) of Americans. He walked out into the lonely Baghdad streets, longingly staring towartds the Red Zone, and found himself SCREAMING AT A WALL (Minor Threat). We walked home slowly, kicking rocks on the way, and when he got there he buried his face in pillows and sang THE LONELINESS SONG (Best Friends Forever).

That night he cried himself to sleep. He slept heavy, in fact he was IN DEAD SLEEP (The Night Marchers). But not for long, as a call to WAKE UP (The Walkmen) came in the form of mortar alerts. For the next few nights Farrell had INSOMNIA (The Rentals), but eventually got over it and everything was peacful and happy from then on.

Now Farrell was looking forward to the end of his time in Iraq, and we all have one final question for him: WHAT WILL YOU DO WHEN YOUR SUNTAN FADES? (Beulah)

  6. Finally. At least I put it up before nate sent me his address.

Nice work everyone. James is apparently setting a new standard in set list design. Good thing the rest of us will ignore it.

Since I choose the winner this month, I choose “It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home”.
Not only does it have my favorite tRahim Alhaj song, but it also has two (2) Megadeth songs. Although you won, I’m told that doesn’t necessarily mean that you get to choose anything.

  7. Since it’s almost the end of August/September I thought I should post this.

    1. “Sundered Things” by Mutton

I believe one of Farrell’s blogs was title “My friends grow the best beards” which also happen to be lyrics in this song, coincidentally written by Farrell as well. Awesome song too (not biased).

    2. “Ants” by John Frusciante

Although this song doesn’t mention the Ants biting any taints or balls I’d like to think it would if this song had lyrics.

    3. “Airborne” by Bright Channel
    4. “Have a Cigar” by Primus

This was one of my favorite parts of Farrell’s blog where he was having a cigar with a colleague.

    5. “Soldiers” by Steel Pulse
    6. “Propaganda” by Nacao Zumbi
    7. “Debrefing” by Vic Chesnutt

    Debreifing with powerpoints of course

    8. “The Bunker” by Beirut
    9. “Happiness is a Warm Gun” by the Beattles
